“Different Dimensions” - an evening devoted to exploring and embracing special learning styles presented by Lisa Shaffren, a tutor with Chyten Educational Services

The Center on Central and Chyten bring you Different Dimensions, a presentation and discussion about special learning styles.

WIth the guidance of our presenter, Lisa Shaffren, a tutor with Chyten Educational Services, each participant will create a personalized Learning Styles Inventory, as a first step to taking account of some of the individual differences which manifest themselves in the classroom, and as a prelude to sharing strategies to foster success.

Lisa will also share some of her own experiences as an unconventional learner. She will discuss some of the difficulties she has encountered in her own path, how she has responded to them, and how her experiences have helped shape the strategies she now uses with non-traditional students. Lisa has developed and refined these tools by combining reflection on her own experiences and thought processes with observation of her students’ learning processes and consideration of their individual needs.

Lisa finds inspiration daily in the powerful collaboration between special learners and a tutor constantly learning to discipline and harvest her own thought processes.

Lisa Shaffren, Chyten tutor and experienced educator, has an undergraduate degree in Biology from the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State. She wrote her honors thesis on intrinsic motivation in education, and earned her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Mississippi through the Mississippi Teacher Corps. Mississippi Teacher Corps is the service program that placed her in the critical needs classroom where she served for two years as a teacher, mentor, tutor and coach. During her years in the Mississippi Delta, she initiated several popular after-school programs, including a creative expression program and an ACT preparation class. She also spent a year working for Citizen Schools, a progressive non-profit organization focused on community building and youth education. She now proudly works for Chyten Education in Narberth, PA, as a tutor with the center for test-preparation and subject-tutoring.
